The BC Blueberry Council recognizes generations of growers this Mother’s Day (read till the end for a quick field update!)

This Mother’s Day, the BC Blueberry Council is recognizing the generations of moms that provide us with our delicious BC Blueberries. Without the mothers featured below, their blueberry farms wouldn’t operate.

If there are any BC Blueberry grower, processor, or packer moms that deserve to be highlighted this Mother’s Day, tag @bcblueberries in your Mother’s Day posts so that we can spread the love.

Meet the Generations of BC Blueberry Moms

All mothers in BC Blueberries should be recognized for the hard work that they do, both as moms and as BC Blueberry suppliers.

Here are a few mothers that contribute to the thriving blueberry industry in British Columbia:

Didar Berry Farm, Harjinder Didar

Harjinder is the matriarch of the Aujlay family, owners of Didar Berry Farm in Delta, BC. The Aujlay family takes great pride in producing high-quality blueberries that are handpicked in their fields along Burns Bog. Without Harjinder’s leadership and expertise, Didar Berry Farm wouldn’t be able to serve farm fresh BC Blueberries throughout the Lower Mainland.

Mandair Farms, Jasbir Mandair

Jasbir Mandair (pictured in the second frame) is the second generation of mothers present in her family. She first started farming in India before moving to Canada with her mother, Mohinder (pictured in first frame), and the rest of her family.

Jasbir began Mandair Farms with her husband, Surinder, over a decade ago, and has passed along her love of agriculture to her children (pictured in third frame). After Surinder passed away in 2015, Jasbir had to lead the Mandair family and farm without the help of her husband. Her youngest son, Sajan, has followed in Jasbir’s footsteps and now helps run the farming operation. Mandair Farms would not be the blueberry haven that it is today if not for Jasbir.

Visit @mandairfarms to enter their Mother’s Day giveaway for the chance to win their house-made jam (made with BC Blueberries) and other local products.

If you know other BC Blueberry Council member mothers that deserve a shoutout, please forward images to the @bcblueberries Instagram page for a chance to be featured.

Spring Field Update

According to the final April IPM Newsletter, most varieties are in early to mid-bloom across the Fraser Valley. All regions are in a similar crop stage, with some varieties further ahead.

Reka blueberries are in mid-bloom, while Duke, Bluecrop, and Cargo are in early to mid-bloom. Bluejay, 1613, Last Call, Elliot, Liberty, Aurora, Draper, Calypso, and Valor are in the pink-tip to early bloom stage (IPM Newsletter, April 30 2021).

Pollinators have moved in on many farms and initial blossom fungicides are being applied when bees are least active, during the morning or evening.

Stay updated on the latest field news through our IPM Newsletter, released every Friday. Are you a BCBC member who is not receiving our IPM newsletter? Please contact info@bcblueberry.com to be added to the list.
