Eating right – a top priority for everyone, especially those with Diabetes

Abbotsford, BC – To raise awareness of Diabetes in Canada, November has been declared National Diabetes Month with November 14 selected as World Diabetes Day.

The Canadian Diabetes Association (www.diabetes.ca) website emphasizes that taking care of your health should be top priority and eating healthy meals and snacks is one of the key ingredients for anyone – especially those with diabetes.

In its “10 Tips for Tasty and Healthy Meals” – the Association heralds the fact that fruits and vegetables provide lots of vitamins and minerals to help keep you healthy at a very modest calorie cost.  In general, the darker the colour, the higher the nutrients.

And what better healthy hue, than the distinctive blue colour of a blueberry – often referred to as a superfood because of the high polyphenol content.

Anju Gill, executive director, of the BC Blueberry Council (BCBC) says the polyphenols are micronutrients with high antioxidant, linked to a wide range of health benefits.

Blueberries are also full of essential vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, A and E, as well as potassium, calcium and magnesium. A one-cup serving of blueberries contains only 80 calories.

Like the Canadian Diabetes Association, the BC Blueberry Council offers a rich assortment of smart recipes on its website, www.bcblueberry.com.  With over 80 years of growing experience, the BC Blueberry Council represents over 600 highbush blueberry growers.
