BC Blueberries – The Perfect Choice for your Healthy Diet

Thu, Aug 29, 2019
blueberries

Abbotsford, B.C. – Whether you are a vegetarian or vegan, follow Weight Watchers or the Mediterranean-style diet, BC’s blueberries are one of the leading choices for those concerned with not only watching their weight but in a healthy lifestyle.

Full of essential vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin C, A and E, a one cup (250 ml) serving of blueberries contains 3.6 grams of dietary fibre and just 80 calories.

And while summer starts to wind down, there are still plenty of fresh BC highbush blueberries to be found in your local supermarkets and along roadside stands.

“We’ve had a great summer this year,” says Anju Gill, executive director of the BC Blueberry Council, which represents more than 600 highbush blueberry growers. “Combined, our blueberry crop this year will exceed 170 million pounds.”

Although there are many different varieties of blueberries throughout the blueberry season, this time of the year you will still be able to find the Aurora variety on the bushes.  All other varieties have now been harvested.

As parents start to think about back to school, Gill reminds us that fresh berries make a great addition to your children’s lunch boxes.

With over 80 years of blueberry-growing experience, the BC Blueberry Council’s growers have more than 11,000 hectares (27,000 acres) of highbush blueberries planted in order to meet growing demand.  The BC Blueberry Council has a strong commitment to on-farm food safety and works diligently with blueberry growers and collaborates with packers and processors to ensure that BC blueberries meet the highest standards for food safety and quality.
