Fall for Frozen BC Blueberries

Wed, Oct 13, 2021
Mom and boy eating frozen blueberries

As we head into chilly weather this fall and winter, bundle up and make your way to the freezer aisle! Frozen BC blueberries are available now, and satisfy your blueberry craving all year round. Head to the frozen food section of your favorite supermarket this season, and check for the “BC Grown” label or “Packaged in BC” wording on the package. Read more below and find out where you can get frozen BC blueberries today!

In grocery stores, the Western Family brand of frozen BC blueberries is available at Save On Foods, Price Smart Foods or Urban Fare. You can also find Bergen Farms frozen blueberries at Thrifty Foods across BC and CO-OP stores in Western Canada (BC, Alberta). Rumour has it some other large grocery chains are bringing in our BC-grown, highbush, cultivated frozen berries- visit your local grocer, and remember to look for "BC Grown" on the label.

Frozen and Healthy
According to research; because commercially packaged blueberries are frozen soon after they are picked, they are equal in quality to fresh. In fact, frozen blueberries might even have the edge over fresh berries when it comes to health benefits as freezing blueberries makes their powerful antioxidants more available to the human body. This is because anthocyanins, the antioxidant compounds that make blueberries blue, are found in the skin of the berry. Freezing the berries creates tiny ice crystals that disrupt the structure of the cells, which in turn makes it easier for our system to access the anthocyanins contained within the skin.

Once you bring home a bag of frozen BC blueberries, check out the Recipes section of our website for inspiration. With 100s of recipes, you are sure to find your new favourite breakfast smoothie, savoury sauce, or sweet treat!
